Classes this weekend!

On Saturday, March 5th, we’re hosting two classes by Glenna C.:

“Crochet for Knitters: Learn Granny Squares” is running from 11 til 1, and will focus on this iconic crocheted motif: the granny square. Granny square blankets are a terrific way to use up leftover yarn from finished projects – the more colours you have, the better! Glenna is on the home stretch of her own blanket, which you can read about on her blog!

In the afternoon, Glenna will be teaching her “Sweater Finishing Techniques” class. If you’ve been thinking of knitting a flat-knit sweater pattern but are intimidated by the idea of seaming all of the pieces together, this is the perfect class for you. As the designer of several beautiful seamed sweaters (such as her Locke St. Cardigan shown above), Glenna is a seaming and sweater finishing master – Saturday’s two hour class is your chance to learn from her expertise!

We still have space available in both classes, so if you want more information, check out our website or send an email to info@needlesinthehay.ca!

(not pictured: big mug of hot coffee)

Working away on a pair of soon-to-be-felted mittens (the Vermont Mitten!) here in the shop today with some treats from Naked Chocolate (they’re just around the corner!) and trying to think warm thoughts for the weekend ahead! Because it is Family Day on Monday, we will be closed both Sunday (February 14th) and Monday (February 15th), as is our long weekend custom around here!

IMG_8386

If you do want to brave the cold, we’re open from 11 to 4 tomorrow (Saturday) and we have some lovely new Gobstoppers in stock – a little Valentine’s gift to yourself perhaps? 😉

Have a great long weekend everyone!

New In Store + Anniversary Sale details!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at Needles in the Hay – we’re still catching our breath after the busy holiday season, but there’s still so much winter left! Which means lots of things still to knit! New in the shop this week:

IMG_8366

And new colourways in Malabrigo Arroyo, too! The sport-weight sister to Rios!

IMG_8338

IMG_8342

And for something a little fun (or funny), faux fur pom poms are now in stock!!

We are now T-minus one week to our annual anniversary sale – can you believe it’s been six years?! We will open an hour earlier next Saturday, February 6th, and will be offering a range of discounts on almost everything in the shop. Plus, there will be candy (there’s always candy). Come say hi! We’ll open at 10 a.m.! 🙂

Tidings of Comfort and Joy!

Finally, I’d like to thank all of you, my customers, for supporting the shop this year. So many of you have tackled new challenges in knitting, crocheting, spinning, and felting, and the results have been beautiful, heartwarming, thoughtful, experimental, and gratifying. I hope you all have a wonderful, magical holiday season, and I can’t wait to see what kinds of needle arts and handcraft projects you choose to explore in the new year. 🙂

This Sunday is our final meetup for the Scrollwork KAL, but since some participants have already finished their hats or cowls, I thought we’d open it up to other people who are working away on Christmas gifts, especially knit-in-secret ones. Think of it as a knitting study hall! This Sunday, December 13th, from 1-3 p.m.!

Last-minute pre-holiday KAL plans + great new yarns!

Hello Scrollwork!

Ethan and I have been talking about running a knit-along (aka KAL) for this pattern for ages and I know that the Christmas holidays are around the corner and everyone’s getting extra busy but we just decided to go for it anyway. Need a new hat and/or cowl for the burgeoning cold season? Need an emergency gift item that’s gender-neutral and a speedy knit? Or maybe you’d just like to learn how to cable or read charts and would like someone to be there to tell you you’re doing it right? Scrollwork is the answer! Both Ethan and I have knit this pattern in the past for other people and I’ve wanted one of my own for a while now. You can choose to knit the hat or the cowl or both, and either Ethan or I will be here on the meetup days to give guidance, fix errors, provide encouragement, et cetera.

Meetup dates are:

Sunday, November 29th, 1-3 p.m. with Ethan

Sunday, December 6th, 1-3 p.m. with me (Bridget)

Sunday, December 13th, 1-3 p.m. with at least me and maybe Ethan too if I bug him enough 😉

If you want to participate but can’t make it to all/any of the meetups, feel free to check in with our Ravelry forum thread for the Scrollwork KAL!

(And participation in KALs is free in the shop if the yarn you’re using was purchased here!)

Now, on to new yarns in stock!

Primetime knitting season is upon us, and I can’t wait to see all of the amazing things you’re going to make this winter! 🙂

Fun with Woolen Spun!

More and more people in the yarn world are talking about woolen spun yarns – 100% wool spun from lightly carded fibres, creating light and lofty yarns that are airy and springy, soft but still woolly. Local dyer, Ambrosia Yarns, recently delivered some of their hand-dyed woolen spun yarn to our shop in two weights:

IMG_8207

This is a light fingering-weight, 350 yards in 50 gram skeins, shown here with a skinny-version Thayer scarf sample which used only one skein.

Birstwith Hat by loveaslug

Emily, aka loveaslug on Ravelry, picked up three skeins the other day and has started this *gorgeous* Birstwith hat – I can’t wait to see how this turns out, so I’ll be keeping an eye on this project page on Ravelry!

IMG_8219

And now we have this beautiful worsted-weight woolen spun as well! At 350 yards to 114 grams, soft and warm hats and mitts are easily made with one skein; a sweater uses as few as four.

IMG_8199

This stunning sample of Cordova was knit up in only five skeins – it’s in the shop now, come a take a look this weekend!
